The entrepreneur faces a moment of truth when he and his partners have grown the company to a sufficient degree to take it to the next level. At that stage it becomes imperative to hire a professional as a functional head say a CFO. Obviously the top manager needs to fill in the skill set the founders may lack. It must also be recognized by founders that this skill set is absolutely vital to succeed.

The founding partners find it difficult (esp. when founders are friends and family ) to cede control to the CFO designate, since it also means giving up certain powers and also business secrets (which the entrepreneur is paranoid about) .

The Top Six Things to consider while setting up a top management team are outlined below

Try and first source from professionals in your network.

They might not be the best person suited for the job, but ‘trust’ is an important criteria at this stage, esp. for a CFO. In circumstances where you cannot find individuals who match at least 50% of skill set required, then use a professional head hunter and do an extensive reference check.

Have an extensive interview process to determine fit

For a business at an early stage, it is important that the top manager can hit the ground running fast. To do this the prospect should broadly agree with the vision of the founders, should have a first hand experience of the company culture and should be exposed to the business model. After both sides are convinced , then the prospect should be made an offer. One cannot over-emphasize the need to make the interview process extensive and lengthy.

Have a defined job role and also outline the powers that will be delegated

The entrepreneurs are very task/activity driven. So they are not great in putting down detailed job description that outlines the scope of work, key responsibilities, key success factors and powers that will be delegated to the top manager. The top manager typically will be coming from the environment where he expects the job description to be given. Entrepreneurs could take consulting help to map out the various competencies they need and how they need to develop.

Implement a performance management system like a Balanced Scorecard, and explain to the senior managers what role they play in value creation and what will the measures to track the value being created by an individual, team, function and the business.

In many businesses that are working in a fast changing environment it is important to tell the senior managers that business tactics may change on a frequent basis, which will impact the requirements of the job and also the key success factors. It is useful to define ‘flexibility’ as a key competency and sound out the senior managers at the ouset.

Work out the compensation and a credible risk-reward equation

Most firms at early stage may not be able to attract talent by paying best-in-class salary or perks. Besides they also do not offer the security of a good established brand name. So any top manager joining firms at this stage is taking some amount of risk. The compensation should have a significant upside in case the top manager is able to achieve the desired business objectives, and the business achieves a desired scale.

Although ESOPs are a good tool to tie-in the top managers with the company’s future, most entrepreneurs do not have a disciplined approach to work out the company valuation , capital structure etc. Some consulting help can be used to work this out and communicate it to the top managers. External help makes the process objective and unbiased and gets greater buy-in from the top managers.

A useful practice is to look at valuations of listed companies in the domain, and peg your company valuation accordingly. This benchmarking is also easily understood .
Typically a pool of 5-15% is necessary.

Founders need to spend a lot of time with their top & middle managers

Typically founders are fairly passionate about their products and their customers. They are not used to spend a lot of time on their managers. This can seriously affect alignment and motivation of senior managers in an growing company. The founders need to put up certain disciplines of touching base (30 minute meeting or at worst a phone call) with their top managers on a daily basis. They need to work on consciously at program , which gets the team to spend quality time together, plan together, review together and often resolve issues that are causing confusion/conflict.

Most founders will be shocked by my recommendation of at least 33% of their time committed to senior management team . But there is no point in hiring professionals if they are not aligned, motivated and guided by founders.

Consciously Work at Soft Issues of Culture, Employee Morale & Organizational Climate

While a lot of example abound about great working culture being consciously created (like the Google college culture) every organization will have its own value system , have its own cultural context determined by the vision, beliefs and the personality of the founders.

Most founders are not very aware of the culture that they have created and are not very equipped at following a strategy to develop rituals , events, activities that supports the culture of the company and boosts the employee morale. They may need to use outside help to define and manage the cultural environment and map the organizational climate.

Founders need to know that senior managers work for myriad of motivations esp. at early growth companies. One of the key motivations is to work in a vibrant, exciting and a motivating company environment. Besides, it also acts as a significant draw for a potential recruit (an oasis to a desert-starved corporate monotony) .

Simple practices such as an open-door management policy, company news board, company night outs, interesting design of work spaces, opportunities for interaction (company cafe, gym etc), flexibility ( telecommute, timings etc.) encouraging volunteerism for non-profits etc. can make a big difference to employee morale and top management motivation.

It is important to institute practices that the founders are comfortable with and define their vision of the company and its culture.

Telephone Systems For Business Purposes

Posted by valeri on Saturday Sep 4, 2010

Telephone system is a very effective tool to stay connected with your clients and potential customers in business. Actually, it’s a gateway through which you can expand your business or provide customer’s complete satisfaction. There are many telephone systems available in the market for the business purposes, but you have to choose the right as per requirement of the business. One cannot spend excessive money on telephone systems that exceed its needs.

In order to get accurate business telephone system, one has to know how many employees will be using the telephone system. If you have less than ten employees, one may choose either the VoIP or the KSU-less telephone system. VoIP means Voice over Internet Protocol. This uses DSL or other Internet connection to create conversations with a client or to transact business. A person just need a router and then convert the Internet signal for telephone use and you’re all set.

KSU-less telephone system are also suitable in businesses with less than ten employees. The good thing about KSU less systems is that it has many features as compared with VoIP. This type of system has programs that you may install and it is portable. All the routing software is contained within the telephone itself.

If you have more than ten employees but are less than forty, the key telephone system is best option for you. The system offers feature that will manage your telephone system cost if you are starting with a small capital. The advantage of using this system is that it is easy to upgrade and wider and better features than the VoIP and KSU-less telephone systems.

If you have a huge business with more than forty employees, then the PBX telephone system is just right for you. PBX means private branch exchange. Normally, if there are many persons using the Telephone systems, the higher the cost it will be for its use.

The key to your business is Business Broadband

Posted by valeri on Saturday Sep 4, 2010

Computers have become integral parts of our lives, whether it’s at home or at work in an office there is a good chance at some point during our day we will use a computer and more specifically, the internet. Many businesses use the internet to some extent with many businesses in the retail sector now moving towards the online marketplace to cater to their customer’s needs.

More and more people are comparing, shopping and reviewing online and in order to keep up with them your business will need to be online also. There’s a good chance that your business will have many employees who will need to be on the internet or connected to some form of internal network and so your connection needs to be able to cope with this level of workload.

With Broadband internet, speed is vital, especially when multiple people are using it at once. Many Business Broadband connections will need upgrading to better speeds after a threshold of users has been reached. The other important factor is reliability. Your business, especially online ones, lives and breathes on the internet and if your connection goes down then your company stands to lose large amounts of money for every minute that you are unable to connect to the internet.

Business Broadband differs from home broadband in the way that there is an increased focus on maintaining a lower down time percentage and having customer care services that take the customer’s business needs seriously.

A lot of businesses will rely on internet based communication such as email, Skype or Voice Over IP telephone calls, Video conferencing and instant messaging. This is the main reason why business broadband needs to be reliable with nigh on perfect up time, as otherwise your business is incommunicable to your customers or any business communications you may be in the middle of.

Another growing requirement for many businesses is the ability to communicate with those working from home or on the road. Mobile internet technology has come a long way and these days we can access the internet from our laptop computers or mobile phones to stay in touch with the office if we’re out on sales pitches, client meetings or any other external activities. Business Broadband providers should be able to provide secure and fast connections to the home network no matter where you are in the world.

Business broadband can be vital to your business and with many different providers around with business packages it’s important you get all the details before making a decision and if at all possible finding out other business’ providers and whether they are happy with them.

Phil Adams-Wright has written pieces on internet related subject such as business broadband, as well as other subjects like networking and how to get cheap business broadband

Netbooks—small, light, inexpensive laptops designed for basic business tasks like e-mail and Web browsing—first hit the market in the late ’90s (although they weren’t called netbooks back then). They have proved to be a solid seller since then. However, with the advent of the tablets—including the very popular Apple iPad, Hewlett-Packard’s convertible EliteBook, Dell(Dell Vostro A840 Battery)’s soon-to-come Streak and many others in development—a whole new flock of competitors has arisen.

The Onkyo DX1007A5B notebook is why I flew 7,800 miles to attend Computex. It doesn’t feature the fastest processor, or break new ground in terms of the platform. But this is exactly what I expected to find at the show, and it doesn’t disappoint.Become more productive by taking your digital life with you.

Nvidia’s Optimus technology, which allows a laptop to switch between integrated graphics and its discrete card depending on what type of application is running, was launched several months ago, but was only introduced for a handful of systems (mostly from Asus) since then. This week’s Computex show has changed that, as more than a dozen notebooks using Optimus have been announced here.

The Acer(Acer Aspire 7520 Battery) Aspire 7741G proved a comfortable and likeable laptop to use. It’s not the powerhouse its size may suggest but for a busy household looking for a solid and affordable laptop, we found the Acer Aspire 7741G a good all-round option.

Apple announced on Monday that it marked the 2 millionth iPad sale this week and now Gene Munster, an analyst with Piper Jaffray, predicts that Apple(Apple M6392 Battery) will sell as many as 6.2 million devices in 2010 citing strong international demand for the device.

4.3-inch, 800 x 480-pixel screen. 4G WiMax with wireless hotspot powers. 8-megapixel, 720p video camera. Front-facing camera for video chat. 1GHz processor. HDMI out. Kickstand. The Evo’s dossier reads like a phone nerd’s sticky back-of-napkin fantasy, which is precisely the point. The Evo is an icon, manufacturer HTC gleefully tugging at customers’ hems: Look what we can do!

When it came to using the Acer Aspire 5741 out and about, the 2.8kg chassis is a little bulky for daily use but using it around the house is more than comfortable. What’s more, we even managed to get close to five hours from the Acer Aspire 3100 battery, which is great for an entry-level machine.

The NV59C09u includes every port most users could need, including three USB 2.0 ports; HDMI and VGA output for high-def and standard-def monitors and TVs, respectively; an Ethernet jack; and headphone and mic ports. Rounding out the list is a 5-in-1 memory card reader. The Blu-ray player takes up most of the right side, save for two of the USB ports; the rest of the ports are on the left side (the memory card slot is tucked into the front edge).

On a whim, I ran the World in Conflict benchmark test and received a score of 8 frames per second (fps) at 1,024 by 768 resolution, which is unplayable. A score of 4 fps at its native resolution (1,366 by 768) is like watching paint dry. The Lenovo(Lenovo IdeaPad Y430 Battery) IdeaPad Y460, which can switch between an integrated GPU and a discrete ATI 5650 GPU, turned in a much more impressive score of 43 fps while running on ATI power. The Samsung R580 and its Nvidia GeForce 310M GPU, came in at 21 fps.

So make good use of the Internet as you watch and prepare for a storm. Prepare your computer by backing up files, using a surge protector and having ample laptop battery power in case of a long term outage. And stay safe this hurricane season.

Businesses incur thousands upon thousands of dollars in expenses each and every year. From marketing costs to operations, it never seems like there is any more room in the budget for cuts. That’s where Voice over Internet Protocol comes in handy. VoIP, as it is commongly known, is the process of sending voice communication signals over the Internet to avoid common phone relay exchanges. While it is still in its infancy, it stands to change the way that businesses conduct themselves in the next few years by resorting to each of the following:

Eliminating the hardware. Any time a business calls the local phone company out to set up new phones, they are adding to the clutter of their work environment by installing bulky phones in addition to the other mandatory technologies filling out the work facility. With VoIP, everything you need to make a phone call is right there at your computer.

Enabling better multitasking. Since you can make calls with your computer, there is no need to be distracted between the information in front of you and the conversation going on inside your headset. Imagine the possibilities of being able to look at all of a client’s information and personal history while you are on the phone discussing an issue.

Allowing video conferencing. Sales presentations, cooperative communications, and other forms of face to face networking no longer have to be done in person with the magic of video conferencing. This technological advancement in calling allows you to not only speak to a subject, but it also allows you to study the person’s nonverbal cues as well.

Reducing phone center costs. Running a traditional phone center, which is essential if you are wanting to stay attached to your customers, used to cost a small fortune, but that was before it became as simple as choosing the right plan and empowering your employees with the necessary technology to manage inbound and outbound calls all on their own with nothing but the aid of their computers to guide them.

Bridging the gap that exists internationally. The Internet is a global information highway, and as such, it only stands to reason that you should be using everything you’ve got to harness that connectivity for the advancement of your business. With easier forms of communication, you are poised to do just that. No longer is it too expensive to tap a richly diverse, and financially rewarding, market.

Syncing with smartphones. Many VoIP providers are already making moves toward compatibility with smartphone technology. Simply purchase the application for the provider of your choice and farm all calls through it. That assures you will always have enough minutes to hold a conversation from beginning to end with no worries in between.

With phone voip free internet softphones, you never have to be a slave to the land line again. The sip softphone is a convenient way to go online with all your calling and save money in the process. Visit our site to find out how!

Small Business Pbx Phone

Posted by valeri on Sunday Aug 29, 2010

A PBX can work wonders for a small business, giving it the image of a big or integrated company. That’s mainly because of a host of technological features that come with a small business PBX phone connection, which is a hosted PBX system, also called virtual phone PBX. The hosted PBX system offers all the features of a PBX connection that provides telephone and voicemail features, without the business actually having to purchase the PBX equipment. The small business, the user of the virtual PBX system, won’t have to maintain the equipment as all the PBX features are offered through a hosted server. For small businesses looking to keep costs down, the virtual small business PBX phone is just the right solution.

Helping Businesses Handle Calls Better

The common features offered by virtual small business PBX systems include call transfer between extensions, custom messages for those holding the line, custom business greeting for callers, employee extension to direct multiple calls, detailed call records, real time system management, and more. These features contribute to efficient call handling, an important factor to cast a positive impression on clients. The detailed list of features offered includes:

• Automatic voice call facility
• Fax
• Fax mail
• Call screening
• Caller id tool
• Web administration
• Voicemail
• Toll free enhancement
• Pager notification
• Call by extension
• Multiple voice mailboxes

Answer Calls from Anywhere – Unmatched Flexibility

Another benefit of a hosted PBX system, particularly for small scale businesses, is the flexibility it offers. Employees handling calls for a business could be geographically located anywhere and still be able to receive calls from clients dialed to the same number, as an extension is associated with an individual and not with a phone located in an office. The client gets the impression he’s calling one office.

To conclude, a hosted small business PBX phone system is of vital importance for any growing business.

AccessDirect provides feature-rich small business PBX phone system based on hosted PBX technology. Through our small business PBX system you can create an excellent impression on your clients.
